The business of advertising is used to sell products. Without advertising it would be much more difficult to sell a product. Advertising makes products look more appealing to the customers eye. People pay for advertising using companies that deal wioth Public Relations, as well as regular advertising. Advertisers use different techniques to find out who the target auddiences are, such as surverys. Once they find out who the target audiences are, they use that to their advantage and use special sell points to sell a product.

Assignment 4

please write a blog post with an outlook or forecast of what you think are the key issues facing media in the next five years. how do these ideas impact your media career opportunities? how do you think the way we all use media will evolve? if we were to invest in 3 existing media companies – what 3 do you think would be the best investments?

I think the key issues facing media in the next five years will be dealing with the economy. Unfortunately it is not going to heal overnight and it is going to take a few years for families to get back on track once this comes to an end. Though, people will be going out for entertainment and ultimately giving the media more and more money, it still won’t be the same it was before the recession hit. This could impact my career opportunities as a wedding planner because if people don’t have enough money to pay for entertainment, why would they spend money on a wedding planner? I think the media we use will evolve by the news for example, getting more sources to rely on than they already have, and magazines adding more than just being about beauty. They could have a section with other things maybe like reality in them. I would choose Time Warner, Walt Disney, and Google. Time Warner is the largest media conglomerate, and next comes Disney, Google is way up there, but still has a ways to go.

Media Products VS. Physical Products

To run a tire manufacturing company, you really need the physical tires to show to the consumer before they actually make a purchase. If your running a film production company, you are always in the process of making a movie, but it is always incomplete (doesn’t exist) until the movie is actually made.

TV entry

I really don’t watch TV often- just when my favorite television shows come on.. True Blood, Friends re-runs, Gilmore Girls re-runs, What I like About You and The Secret Life of The American Teenager. I definitely find it to be a better experience watching online. Why? Well, because you can pause it and start it whenever you please, you can watch it whenever you have the time to, you can watch multiple episodes back to back, there are fewer advertisements also! When I am not watching TV, I am either working, doing homework, hanging out with family and friends etc. I prefer not to be a couch potato, and go out and have fun instead. I like going to adventure parks, water parks etc. I like to run, I like to go to the city and see shows (things of that nature.) I replace the internet with the actual TV for all of the reasons I listed above, and I think TV is going to cease to exist in the years to come and become internet television or something.

Assignment 3

on your blog:

I use media every single day! Whether its my satellite television, a trip to the movie theatre, a concert, or broadway play…I pay for the media I consume by working. My paycheck obviously doesn’t all go to media, but I set aside money for entertainment purposes. I think, depending on where I am going, I do get ripped off sometimes. I think certain concert tickets are a rip off, broadway plays are a little on the expensive side, and of course-movie theaters are expensive! I just went to see a movie the other day and for my ticket, a drink, popcorn, and a candy my total came to $25.00. Now, if I were to purchase the movie on dvd to have forever, buy a drink, popcorn, and candy at a regular store, the price would be about the same, but that is to have this movie for the rest of my life, to watch as many times as I want. I value all of the media I consume, and depending on the type of media I am seeing and who it is I am seeing, I think I receive a good deal sometimes.

Assignment 2: Economic Outlook on the Media

9 07 2009

The Economic Outlook on the Media

From watching the videos for this class, I have learned that the newspapers and movie theaters are in serious trouble. The newspapers, at one point in time were the only way to get the news. As time went forward, and more technological advances took place, magazines came out, then radio, then television, and now we have the internet. We now have radio, television, and internet that can all be accessed from one device; a telephone. There are even newspapers that have websites! One could also use a search engine to obtain information. Though, some people enjoy sitting down in the morning to read the newspaper with a cup of coffee in hand, newspapers are still a dying brand. Not many people want to sit down and read a newspaper, and not many people have the time to do so anymore. During the Great Depression, movie theaters made an enormous amount of money. To go and see a movie was a cheap entertaining thing to do. Now, during the recession we are in today, not many people can afford to go see a movie at $10.00 a person plus snacks. Just to see a movie in a theater in todays day in age it can cost $20.00 a person! (which isn’t the most recession proof source of entertainment anymore.) This summer, box office totals have dropped compared to last summer. Being that summer is a good time to catch a movie, totals should be up. With box office hits hitting theaters, such as: Transformers, and Harry Potter, hopefully box office totals will go up. Another few forms of entertainment are: Hospitality, Leisure, and Food Services. The jobs in these categories were hit pretty hard during the recession but job availability has gone up over the past few months, which is a very good thing because this is my field of study. I want to be an event planner and at the moment I work at a hotel. Hopefully the job market continues to rise in the communications industry by the time I graduate. (next may!) Otherwise, I may be feeling the heat of the recession along with a few million other college graduates looking for jobs. In one of the videos that was assigned, there was a prediction of approximately 10% unemployment. Right now, unemployment is at 9.4 %. This means two things: people are trying to get into the workforce and look for jobs and more jobs are being lost. Hopefully the recession comes to an end soon because at the moment, I am not so sure there are going to be many jobs out there for inexperienced college graduates.
